Training Log 1/25/2026-1/31/2026
Suffered a minor setback with an overuse injury this week. I strained my tibialis anterior, which is on the outside of the front of the leg. It feels very similar to a shin splint and definitely makes pushing off my foot, especially on the uphills, difficult. I think it flared up on Monday at the gym, feeling like a 3-4 on the pain scale, and worsened after Tuesday’s run. I woke up Wednesday morning at a 7-8 pain level and decided to take the next two days off from running. I pushed a 19-mile run on Saturday, with my left leg feeling pretty good during the run, but it did make me noticeably slower; it didn’t get worse. Next week, I hope to approach 100 miles of running, fingers crossed.

After visiting the gym, I enjoy running a few laps around Sparks Marina. I always stop by Johnny’s remembrance plaque at the military memorial there. I had the pleasure of working with Johnny and sharing a tractor with him for two years. He was such a kind person who would go out of his way for others, and you could tell if he liked you because he’d give you a special nickname. My nickname was Kramer from the Seinfeld TV show, though I never quite understood why it was given to me—it was probably because of my Energizer-bunny vibe! Johnny is also one of the reasons I’m lucky enough to be with my wonderful girlfriend, Michelle, who some might say we’re a bit of an odd couple. She played a big part in getting Johnny’s plaque placed at the Marina so everyone could remember what a great person he was. Hays even made it onto her refrigerator, which she only reserves for the most important people in her life. Recently, I’ve also been lucky enough to receive a special spot on her refrigerator wall where she keeps her most meaningful things.
Always remember the important people who touch you through life.
